According to the Local Food Wheel, it’s Officially “Dark Days”

I turned our local/seasonal food wheel over to the first week of January. This is it. Dark Days ahead!

Our local food wheel sees three more months of winter (click for larger version).

According to the wheel, from now on only the following will be available, and not in peak (i.e., in storage). According to the wheel, this condition lasts through March:

Potatoes Onions Cabbage Beets Carrots Rutabaga, Turnips Parsnips Shallots Winter Squash . . . → Read More: According to the Local Food Wheel, it’s Officially “Dark Days”

Roasted Vegetables – Winter Version and Misc. Techniques

We already covered the how-to’s of roasting vegetables in our techniques section. Since it’s such an easy meal, I made a winter version last week while Lindsay was away. Dark Days: Crostini with Butternut Squash and Ricotta

Pulled this one out just in time!! Thanks to the chaos caused by Snowmageddon 2010, my travel plans were up in the air for days. It’s also great to be back in my own kitchen!

Lentil and Butternut Squash Chowder

I was shocked by how easy and tasty this meal is.

The hardest part is peeling, seeding, and chopping the butternut squash, which isn’t that hard at all. If you can manage that step, you’ve got this meal. It’s also almost impossible to screw up, which is good since I was doing it on my own (see last week’s pasta that needed to be rescued).

NYC Snowmageddon

After a break for the holidays, we thought that we would be back on our regular posting schedule this week, but Mother Nature had other ideas.

On top of the Saturday Union Square greenmarket being closed for two weeks in a row due to calendar luck (Christmas and New Year’s), there was a third closure on Monday due to snow.

Finally, Lindsay’s flight back today was cancelled and she won’t make it home until later . . . → Read More: NYC Snowmageddon
